Recognize and Report Housing Discrimination: Piedmont Housing Alliance, HUD, & the National Fair Housing Alliance Partner for Public Awareness

Charlottesville, VA – Piedmont Housing Alliance (PHA) has just received national public awareness campaign materials created by HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) and NFHA (National Fair Housing Alliance). HUD and NFHA have partnered to create this campaign in efforts to promote national awareness about how to recognize and report housing discrimination, as well as how to avoid predatory loans terms and alternatives to foreclosure. The media campaign includes a total of 26 products, including print ads, posters, television PSAs, radio PSAs, a movie slide, and an airport diorama, with some variations in English, Spanish, and Chinese. HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan said, “I’m thrilled that the National Fair Housing Alliance, in partnership with HUD is launching an ad campaign to address the fair housing challenges in the foreclosure crisis, including predatory lending and foreclosure scams.” PHA seeks to partner with local media outlets to communicate this message of fair and equal housing opportunities throughout our local communities.

Piedmont Housing Alliance, a NFHA member, is a regional nonprofit organization that creates housing and community development opportunities for very low to moderate income families and individuals; teaches financial literacy and management, home buying and home ownership skills; and advocates for affordable housing policies and programs in central Virginia. The goal of PHA’s Fair Housing Program is to raise awareness and promote compliance with federal and state fair housing laws that protect our community from discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, presence of children in the family, and elderliness in the rental, sale, and financing of housing. PHA’s fair housing activities include responding to discrimination complaints and compliance questions, conducting fair housing education sessions, creating comprehensive educational materials and public awareness campaigns, and chairing the Regional Fair Housing Advisory Meetings. The Fair Housing Program is sponsored in part under a grant with the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development, and is dedicated to the public.
