Piedmont Housing Alliance Wins Gold Medal Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award

Piedmont Housing Alliance is proud to announce that our Kindlewood Community Redevelopment project has been honored with a Gold Medal in the 2026 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards. The award was presented on March 24, 2026, at the Environment Virginia Symposium and recognizes organizations across the Commonwealth that are leading the way in environmental stewardship, sustainability, and conservation. The Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards are considered one of Virginia’s highest environmental honors, jointly administered by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Governor’s Office. They highlight projects that demonstrate measurable environmental results, long term commitment, and innovative approaches to protecting natural resources.
Each year, the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards highlight the most impactful environmental initiatives in Virginia. Gold Medal recipients represent the highest level of achievement, honoring projects that demonstrate measurable environmental benefits and a strong commitment to innovation, collaboration, and long term community well being. Being selected from organizations statewide underscores the significance of the Kindlewood redevelopment and the vision that has guided it from the beginning.
The Kindlewood Community Redevelopment project reflects years of planning, partnership, and community engagement. From the outset, our goal has been to create high quality, affordable homes while advancing environmental sustainability and resilience. This award recognizes the comprehensive work behind that effort, including sustainable design, energy efficient building practices, protection of natural resources, climate resilient infrastructure, and a focus on healthier, more efficient homes for residents. Kindlewood stands as a model for how affordable housing and environmental responsibility can move forward together.
This recognition belongs to everyone who contributed to the Kindlewood vision. Our partners, staff, and residents have played essential roles in shaping a community rooted in sustainability, equity, and resilience. We are grateful for the collaboration that made this achievement possible and inspired by what it represents: a future where environmentally responsible development is central to building thriving communities.
As we continue our work across the region, this Gold Medal serves as both an honor and a motivation. Piedmont Housing Alliance remains committed to advancing housing solutions that support people, protect the environment, and strengthen the fabric of our communities. Thank you to everyone who has been part of this journey. Kindlewood’s success and this statewide recognition reflect what we can accomplish when we work together toward a more sustainable and equitable future.
