My name is Ashley Williams. I grew up in Northern Albemarle County, where my mother rented a duplex in the Briarwood subdivision for 17 years. While that was home to us, it was never ours.
When I became an adult, and after I had my two sons, I dreamed of owning my own home. This was important because I would be the first in my immediate family to have homeownership, and my boys would have a place to call their own and make memories.
I started looking for a house in early 2020. Due to COVID, I had to pause my search. For the next four years, I worked, raised my sons, paid rent on time, and periodically checked real estate sites. I even worked with a realtor. There were times I felt discouraged and frustrated. Everything I looked at was either out of my price range, needed major work, or wasn’t right for my family. I paused my search again.
In early 2025, I started again and included my boys, now ages 11 and 14, getting their ideas on the perfect home. One thing was clear: we all wanted a place to call our own, where they could spend the rest of their childhood and create lasting memories.
This time I worked with Piedmont Housing Alliance. From there, I learned about the Piedmont Community Land Trust (PCLT) program. After attending the first meeting, my excitement grew. I learned of a new development being built and hoped it could be our new home. When I saw the property and walked in, I knew it was exactly what we had been looking for.
I recommend anyone looking for assistance with purchasing affordable housing reach out to Piedmont Housing Alliance and the Piedmont Community Land Trust, especially someone who may not be able to afford the rising prices of homes in our area.
I am forever grateful and blessed beyond words. I thank God every day for how He has blessed my family. I am truly thankful to all the staff at Piedmont Housing Alliance and the Piedmont Community Land Trust who helped make our dream come true. My boys and I now have a home we can call our own.
