Girls on the Run to Sweet Briar

On Saturday, May 2, the Girls on the Run from Friendship Court will once again be traveling to Sweet Briar College in Amherst, VA for the end of season 5K Run.  It should be a beautiful day, quite a bit warmer than the last time the girls were there, in November 2014 for their first-ever race.  This will likely be their last trip to Sweet Briar, which has announced its impending closure at the end of this academic year.

The Girls on the Run program focuses on pre-teen girls, and in addition to training their bodies to run, it helps to train them emotionally and intellectually for the challenging times ahead.  In their teen years, these girls will be facing lots of pressures, both academic and social.  GOTR provides them with some tools to handle those pressures, and the experience of having started and completed a task–running a 5K race–that might have seemed daunting when they began.

While this is a time of endings at Sweet Briar, for the girls from Friendship Court, it is a time of triumph and of beginnings.
