How Do We Live in our Cities?
I know that title sounds like a rhetorical question, but I’m actually talking about some interesting data from an article in the Washington Post by entitled, The most popular type of home in every major American city, charted.
The article–charts included–shows that the layout of our largest cities varies dramatically. What is most surprising is that of the 40 largest cities in the U.S., more than half of them predominantly comprise single family homes–not skyscrapers or apartment buildings.
The main take-away for the authors from this study is that most of these cities can tolerate a lot more density. Density is a big bone of contention in Charlottesville, which has had some less-than-beautiful examples of increased density added to our cityscape. Projects that add density and accomplish other goals to benefit the community–now that’s the ticket. That’s what Piedmont Housing has in mind.–ktk
