Renovations Complete at The Meadowlands Apartments
Residents at The Meadowlands Apartments in Crozet, Virginia, are enjoying brand new kitchens, bathroom fixtures, and HVAC systems, along with improved safety features and enhanced social spaces. This 30-unit building is home to 31 people whose rent payments are affordable for their fixed incomes. Piedmont Housing Alliance and Meadows Housing Corporation made it a priority to renovate the property, and applied for financing to pay for the $500,000 renovation, which began in the summer of 2015 and was completed March of 2016.
Interior renovations included new kitchen cabinets and appliances, new bathroom fixtures, new flooring, new lighting, new heating & air conditioning units, new levered passage sets and door hardware, and new paint in each apartment. Interior common spaces received similar treatment with new flooring, lighting, paint, and a new air conditioning system. Improved safety features included modernized accessibility, updated emergency call and entry access systems, additional fire and smoke alarms, new fire doors, and new hydraulic door controls. Another upgrade included card-read washers & dryers, replacing the old coin operated versions.
However, perhaps the most visible change to the building is the addition of the new entry portico and permanent seating at the main entrance to the building, which was added to provide a secure covered entry and social gathering space for Meadowlands residents.
Resident Karen Davis commented, “Working with Kelvin Bell was a wonderful experience. He really understood our concerns and was happy to spend time with us to explain the renovation process and keep the disruption to our daily lives to a minimum.”
Previous renovations included replacement of the roof, siding and windows using a weatherization grant, and an addition of a solar hot water system to increase energy efficiency.
