Student Nurses Conduct Home Visits at Woods Edge Apartments
Under the guidance of Sharon Veith, assistant professor at the University of Virginia School of Nursing, visiting nurses have been on-site at Woods Edge. Fourth-year nursing students Amelia and Anna Clare visit on Tuesdays throughout the fall semester, as health care resources for the residents of Woods Edge, our senior affordable living community on Rio Road in Albemarle County.
The nurses are available to visit with residents by request and conduct home visits offering basic first aid, filling medication boxes, making safety assessments of the home, answering questions about diseases or conditions, and helping to make doctor appointments. They also organize health-related events for all residents promoting socialization and exercise.
The nurses report enjoyable visits in which they can see patients in their homes rather in the hospital setting, and have more time to visit with them and answer their questions. “We did a puzzle with a couple of residents last week!” Amelia says.
The visiting student nurse program is in partnership with JABA and is another benefit to senior living at Woods Edge Apartments. For more information about living at Woods Edge, contact Panyha Brown at 434-975-9090.
