Another Barrier to College: Housing
Student debt is made up of more than just tuition and fees. High housing costs are getting in the way of education–so much so that more than 50,000 college students are homeless, according to this monograph by HUD, Barriers to Housing. The housing that has gone up on West Main Street in Charlottesville is aimed at the lucrative college market–kids spending their parents’ money or building even more debt to get through the four years. We should be able to do better for our state’s bright young students. College–and all its associated costs–should not be only for the wealthy.
